Magic Fit is an AI-powered sizing tool for fashion ecommerce that delivers personalised size recommendations in two clicks. This case study looks at what happens when a brand sells internationally — and how an AI sizing solution helps bridge the gap between markets.
The Brand
Founded in Wellington in 2006, Kowtow is a B Corp certified sustainable fashion label. They sell online via three separate Shopify stores: New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.
The NZ customer knows Kowtow. They’ve tried pieces on in-store and so, more often than not, they know how the brand fits. The US customer, however, is a different story. The first time they’ve come across the brand is online, they love the sustainability story, but they have zero frame of reference for how a Kowtow “M” compares to what they’re used to; especially when the sizing is done on the other side of the world.
Size Confidence When Going Global
Expanding internationally is a challenge even at the best of times, made even harder by inconsistent sizing around the world. And the further away the customer is, the more painful a return becomes — international shipping, customs, weeks of waiting. It’s often just easier to buy from someone else.
That pain is directly proportional to how cautious customers are at checkout. And size charts don’t help since they can’t tell a US shopper whether a Kowtow “M” fits like the American brands they know. So international customers hesitate. If a brand is compelling enough, they might play it safe with single-item orders, but often don’t buy at all.
What We Did
We deployed Magic Fit as a cross-border sizing solution across all three Kowtow stores. Same widget, same 2-click UX — height, weight, age (and bra) — whether you’re shopping in Auckland, Sydney, or New York. Magic Fit uses native units for each market to make every shopper feel at home.
The Data
Across 2026 to date (January–June), we compared Magic Fit usage and AOV across all three geographies. The pattern is the same in both: the further a shopper is from Wellington, the more value Magic Fit creates.
US shoppers used Magic Fit 2.5× as often as NZ shoppers — and saw an AOV uplift of +23%, the strongest of any market.
It’s clear that AOV uplift (and usage) maps directly to how painful a return would be. A NZ customer can pop into a store or post something back cheaply — low stakes resulting in a small, but still meaningful, uplift. A US customer is looking at international return shipping, customs, and weeks of waiting. When Magic Fit removes that risk, the shopper can buy with confidence.
Methodology: Compared Magic Fit orders vs non–Magic Fit orders across all three Kowtow stores, January–June 2026.
